A Word from John Sharp…
I started my newsletter last month by saying - "I hope you've all been enjoying this fantastic weather" - and I could start this one with the same way, isn't it a fantastic summer!
It was great to join (this term is used loosely) the closing stages of the Kilbryde Hike in South Lanarkshire recently . I know the organisers were delighted by the growth in number of groups that they had taking part and are looking forward to celebrating the 50th anniversary of Hike in 2019.
Since the start of the year, when we circulated the Scotland Workplan, I have had an opportunity to discuss the plans with the majority of Battalions. I shared with the Scotland Committee at our last meeting some of the key things that have struck me from these discussions, which have included: the need for greater support & training around working with young people with additional support needs, the challenges of recruiting leaders, a strong interest in the Hub Company model that is currently being piloted in North Ayrshire, the visibility of the Brigade both locally and nationally and the importance of our Brigade vision, mission and values.
As we now prepare our plans for the coming session these learnings will be incorporated into our activities in the 18/19 session. For those Battalions that I haven't been able to meet with over the last six month, I would very much welcome the opportunity to meet with you in the new session.
Preparations for Brigade conference, which takes place in Edinburgh this year, are well underway. In our 135th year of working with young people, conference will carry the 'Year of Young People' theme. More information about the workshops that will be are available here [link to website].
I am pleased to say that we have some funding is now available specifically to support young leaders to attend conference this year (to help with travel costs etc.). It would be great to see a young leader from every Battalion in Scotland. Please get in touch with Rhona [firstname.lastname@example.org] if you have a young leader that you would like to support with this funding.
Finally we will have some exciting news and information on great resource which all Companies in Scotland will be receiving that we will be sharing next month. Watch this space!
Warmest wishes from Carronvale,
