In
February 2007 a group of young officers in Scotland designed, planned
and ran a pilot event called ‘The Gathering’. The aim of this
event was to engage young people in the Brigade, to seek their views
and opinions - effectively - to enable the ‘voice’ of young
people to be heard right to the highest levels of our organisation,
for indeed, young people are vital in shaping the future direction
and development of The Boys’ Brigade.
The format of the event, involving different fora for discussion, exciting and thought-provoking worship, a celebrity speaker and an unprecedented open-forum question and answer session with the Brigade Executive, proved to be a highly successful event and format, and moreover, helped work towards Aim 5 of the 2003-2008 Development Plan ‘To promote the participation and empowerment of young people by developing the decision-making infrastructure of the BB’.
With that in mind, it was recognised by the planning committee for Council 2008 and those involved in the planning and delivery of ‘The Gathering’ pilot event, that the format could be broadened in both scale and scope such that it would form an ideal format for a young peoples event at Brigade Council.
In
light of this, ‘The Gathering’ planning group for Brigade Council
2008 has developed a short promotional trailer, outlining plans for an
event for Young People running alongside and integrated with Brigade
Council 2008. The trailer is available to view online or for
download as a podcast and has been distributed as a DVD to Battalions. Battalions have been encouraged to promote the event among
young people – seniors and young officers - and to use the DVD at
events and meetings over the coming session to inform young
people about the event and encourage them to sign up and get
involved.
It is our vision to get as many young people from across the whole of the UK and Ireland as we can accommodate at Tulliallan Castle. Council is about the members of The Boys’ Brigade coming together and this should be no exception for young people in our organisation.
